Second Annual Forum To Be in NYC on Aug. 25

The TIA and USTA will share the news in tennis at the second annual TIA Tennis Forum, presented by Tennis Magazine, on Monday, Aug. 25, at the Grand Hyatt in New York City, in conjunction with the 38th Annual USTA Tennis Teachers Conference.

The hour-long Forum, which is free to attendees, will celebrate the sport and serve as a rallying point for the industry. Topics will include the latest research in tennis, an overview of key USTA and industry initiatives, and other news in the sport. In addition, we’ll announce the inaugural class of inductees for the new Tennis Industry Hall of Fame.

“Last year’s Forum was an important opportunity to come together and present the facts and our unified mission of tennis growth,” says TIA President Dave Haggerty. “This year, we look forward to sharing the news about tennis participation, equipment sales, league play and much more, including key research that can help your business. Also, we’re pleased to announce our first Tennis Industry Hall of Fame class, honoring those who have made a significant impact on the sport.” (See below.)

Some of the research will include how tennis is weathering the overall economic climate. “We know there are many challenges for retailers and manufacturers,” says TIA Executive Director Jolyn de Boer. “But our research shows that people are still going out to play tennis, which is certainly a bright spot in this industry.”

The Forum will start at 9 a.m. in Manhattan Ballroom at the Grand Hyatt (immediately following the 8:30 a.m. USTA awards presentation). Admission is free and includes breakfast for all registered attendees, along with an information packet. There will be a question-and-answer session. Attendees also will be able to submit questions for any speaker that will then be answered online in an open forum.

“Last year’s TIA Tennis Forum was very informative for me. I learned a lot of inside information about the state of tennis, especially how we can bring more people into the game and keep them playing on a regular basis.”

—Jorge Andrew, Tennis Director, Lexington County (S.C.) Tennis Complex

“I thought the 2007 Forum was extremely productive. Attendees had an opportunity to see how everyone in TENNIS is working together to grow the game!”

—Delaine Mast, National Director, WTT Recreational Leagues

“It was great to hear about all the industry statistics and the game plan for going forward. I am better able to try to develop my club’s programs and plans in line with those initiatives and goals.”

—Bruce Levine, General Manager, Courtside R.C., Lebanon, N.J.

Chicago Cardio Tennis Group Sheds 45 Pounds In 90 Minutes

Chicago’s Midtown Tennis Club was the scene of a Cardio Tennis extravaganza in May for 176 beginning players. On average, each participant burned about 900 calories in 90 minutes — for the group, that was the equivalent of shedding about 45 pounds.

The fun but intense Cardio Tennis workout took place on 18 of Midtown’s courts. “All of the courts were in unison, doing the exact same drills at the same time,” says Butch Staples, head tennis professional at Midtown. “It looked very synchronized and orchestrated and that added to the impact. It made people feel like they were part of a big happening.”

Midtown was one of the first facilities in the U.S. to offer Cardio Tennis when the program was created by the TIA in 2004. “When we started the program, we offered a month of free Cardio Tennis to get people hooked. We held classes nine times a week,” Staples says. “Now we charge $16 a class and offer 20 classes a week. About 200 people participate in Cardio Tennis every week.”

Healthier, Happier and Hooked

June Woodward has been a Cardio Tennis regular at Chicago’s Midtown Racquet Club since the program started four years ago. In that time, the 63-year-old Australian native has lost 103 pounds!

“I started off doing Cardio Tennis when I was overweight and it inspired me to want to get quicker on the court,” she says. “I like the program because you can do the tennis that you like but it’s also a really fun workout. I am now much faster and I feel much better doing it.”

Woodward is just one of many Cardio participants who has seen a remarkable change in their fitness. “I was just hooked,” she says. “And I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.”

Do you or someone you know have what it takes to be the Cardio Tennis Player or Facility of the Month? E-mail your story to Amanda@tennisindustry.org.
TWC of the Month: Family Circle Tennis Center

Where can you find a $15 million award-winning public tennis facility with 17 lighted courts, a 10,200-seat stadium, year-round tennis programs and tournaments for all ages, and the oldest Tier I women’s pro event in the U.S.? At The Family Circle Tennis Center.

The FCTC, 10 miles from downtown Charleston, S.C., was named one of the Top 50 Tennis Welcome Centers for 2007. When the TWC program began in 2004, the center was one of the first to sign on. “We are constantly changing, adding or deleting programs,” says Rob Eppelsheimer, FCTC director. “When we became a TWC, our junior programming changed toward more grassroots offerings, and we saw a dramatic increase in all junior programming.”

July already! Soon the Olympus US Open Series will be here, then the US Open, with all its accompanying events, including the 2nd annual TIA Tennis Forum, held during the USTA TTC, along with the inaugural Tennis Industry Hall of Fame. It’s a celebration of the good news in tennis.

Look at the recent chart from the SGMA—7 years of a dramatic lead over all other sports. And a survey in Australia shows tennis, not cricket, is now that country’s most popular sport. Tennis’ mainstream days are growing globally. Celebrate the good news with us next month.
