Key Findings From the Participation Survey

Total participation broke the 30 million mark in 2009 (a 12% increase to 30.1 million, against 26.9 million in 2008).
New players reached 7.1 million (up 19.5% from 5.9 million in 2008).
Continuing players stand at 16.1 million (up 6.3% over 2008, when it was at 15.1 million).
6.9 million former players came back to the game in 2009 (a big 18% increase compared with 5.9 million in 2008).
But the number of frequent players is down slightly — a 3% decline to 5.4 million, from 5.6 in 2008).
Total play occasions fell in 2009 to 563 million, down 6.6% from where it stood in 2008 (603 million).

There is net growth in all the components examined to monitor court activity (new players, league play, total court usage, and tournament play).
“New players” continues to be the component with the highest net increase (46% of facilities report an increase).
QuickStart Tennis has been adopted by nearly two-thirds of facilities.
