Sock, Davis Earn Wild Cards into 2011 US Open
Top-seeded Jack Sock of Lincoln, Neb., successfully defended his USTA Boys’ 18s National title, and Lauren Davis of Gates Mills, Ohio, captured the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships as the No. 1 seed on Sunday. Both Sock and Davis will receive a main draw wild card into the 2011 US Open.
Sock defeated No. 2 seed Mitchell Frank of Annandale, Va., 6-3, 6-0, in Sunday’s final at Kalamazoo College in Michigan, and did not drop a single set en route to successfully defending his boys’ 18s title and becoming the first back-to-back National Champion since Donald Young in 2005-06. Sock was forced to win two matches on Sunday, as his semifinal match against No. 4 seed Marcos Giron was suspended on Saturday due to rain with Sock up 7-6(5), 3-2 (he ultimately won the second set 6-3). Sock also won the boys’ 18s doubles title with fellow Nebraskan Jackson Withrow of Omaha, and will earn a main draw doubles wild card into the 2011 US Open. Sock, the reigning US Open boys’ champion, becomes the first player to sweep the singles and doubles titles at the USTA Boys’ 18s National Championships since Young in 2006.
Davis, who is coached by John Evert and trains regularly with Chris Evert at the Evert Academy in Boca Raton, Fla., beat No. 4 seed Nicole Gibbs of Santa Monica, Calif., 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-4, in Sunday’s girls’ 18s final at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, and will make her second appearance in a Grand Slam main draw; she won a USTA playoff in December to earn a wild card into the 2011 Australian Open, where she faced Samantha Stosur in the first round. Gibbs, a rising sophomore who helped lead the Stanford Cardinal to the NCAA women’s team final in May, was the girls’ 18s runner-up for the second consecutive year.
Samantha Crawford of Tamarac, Fla., and Madison Keys of Boca Raton, Fla., who train together at the USTA Training Center-Headquarters in Boca Raton, won the girls’ 18s doubles title to earn a main draw doubles wild card into the 2011 US Open.
