Fish Makes History in Delray
Wilson [K]Six-One 95 player Mardy Fish became the first top seed to title in the 17-year history of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships after rallying to defeat Russian qualifier Korolev 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday.
Fish, making his sixth Delray Beach appearance, took home his 3rd career singles title and became the third American to win the event title. Mardy was playing in an ATP World Tour final for the third straight week, after teaming up with Knowles to win the doubles title last week at the ATP World Tour Tournament in Memphis.
“Now is the happiest I’ve ever been,” Fish says. “I think ‘content’ is the perfect word. It’s great to get on a roll like this going into two of the seasons biggest events.”
Fish will take a 12-5 season record into the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Last year at the tournament, he upset three Top 10 players - No. 4 Davydenko, No. 7 Nalbandian, No. 1 Federer - en route to a runner-up finish.
“We are excited that Mardy is hitting his stride at the right time. His superb ball striking abilities make him a threat in any draw and we are proud to have Mardy using the [K]Six-One,” says Jon Muir, General Manager of Wilson Racquet Sports.
“These are two big ones coming up - Indian Wells and Key Biscayne - those are huge for me. It is great to go in with confidence from the past few weeks. And it is always a confidence builder to know I have equipment that will help me play my best tennis,” Fish finishes.
