34th Season of World TeamTennis Pro League Set to Open July 2
NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 16, 2008) - Some of tennis’ top names are expected to return to team action when the 34th season of the World TeamTennis Pro League presented by Advanta kicks off on July 2. The League announced dates today for the 2009 season, which begins with the regular season from July 2-22, and concludes with the WTT Championship Weekend, July 24-26.
The League is expected to announce the lineup of marquee players in early February with
full team rosters finalized at the WTT Player Draft on March 31 in Miami. The location of the WTT Championship Weekend will be announced in early 2009. The New York Buzz, based in Albany, N.Y., are the defending WTT Champions.
Each season, the WTT Pro League features pros competing in the unique World
TeamTennis co-ed team format. Top names from the 2008 season included Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Anna Kournikova, John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, John McEnroe and the U.S.’s top-ranked doubles team of Mike and Bob Bryan. The League is a showcase for three generations of tennis standouts, including legends, current tour players and up-and-coming tennis pros. Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick are among the players who started in the WTT Pro League as teenagers.
WTT’s gender-balanced team concept was created in the early 70s by League co-
founders Billie Jean King and Larry King. Each team is comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Team matches consist of five events, with one set each of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The first team to reach five games wins each set. A nine-point tiebreaker is played if a set reaches four all. One point is awarded for each game won. If necessary, Overtime and a Supertiebreaker are played to determine the winner of the match.
WTT is well known for introducing innovative elements to tennis including instant
replay, co-ed format, cumulative and no-ad scoring, on-court coaching, Supertiebreakers, multi- colored courts and player names on the back of their shirts.
