Simon and Schnyder Celebrate Victories in Bucharest and Bali
Kennelbach - Austria - September 2008 - HEAD players enjoyed success last week at various tournaments around the world.
HEAD player Gilles Simon successfully defended his BCR Open Romania title in Bucharest with a victory over No. 6 seed Carlos Moya in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. In doing so, Simon, who plays with a MicroGEL Prestige MP, earned his third ATP title in 2008 and boosted his chances of earning qualification to participate in the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.
“I’ve played really well this year and have given myself the opportunity to win some matches,” said Simon. “It is a great feeling to be able to defend my title here in Bucharest.”
Along his way to the finals, Simon played a tough match against fellow HEAD player Jose Acasuso in the semifinals, eventually defeating him 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Also in singles competition, HEAD player Richard Gasquet, who plays with a MicroGEL Extreme Pro, made it to the semifinal round losing to eventual runner-up Carlos Moya.
At the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic in Bali, HEAD player Patty Schnyder, who plays with a MicroGEL Radical MP, won her eleventh career title by defeating fellow HEAD player Tamira Paszek in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. The victory also marked Schnyder’s 500th career singles win on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
“This is such a wonderful victory for me,” said Schnyder. “It is an amazing feeling to have earned my 500th singles win and my 11th title.”
Also Paszek had an impressive run beating 3 seeded players during the tournament week. Among others, she defeated No. 1 seeded Daniela Hantuchova in the semifinals in a hard-faught match 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
In doubles competition, HEAD player Peng Shuai, who plays with a MicroGEL Extreme, and her partner Hsieh Su-Wei succeeded in defeating Marta Domachowaska and Nadia Petrova 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 10-7.
