TENNIS.com Sees Surge in Online Audience for Wimbledon
New York (July 9, 2008) — TENNIS.com today announced that Wimbledon helped draw record audiences to its site with 1.5 million unique visits during the tournament, a 57% increase in daily uniques over last year. The biggest gain was for the Wimbledon Men’s Finals with a 105% audience increase from last year.
“TENNIS.com offered its most comprehensive Wimbledon coverage ever including four editor/bloggers at the tournament contributing daily analysis, perspective, match coverage, and an inside look into the event and personalities. Features were published multiple times throughout the day, including a photo gallery of the day’s events. This increased user engagement to 10:25 minutes per visit on average,” says Dominic Schmitt, General Manager of TENNIS.com. “We offered bracket analysis at the draws and as the match evolves, which no other news organization provides. Of course, we offered up to the minute live scoring on all the matches, not just those on Centre Court.”
In addition TENNIS.com contributed exclusive content to ESPN and NBC Sports in the form of blog entries and feature articles, and it launched a daily newsletter Breakfast@Wimbledon sponsored by Rolex, which highlighted action from the previous day and a preview of the tournament’s big matches for that day.
“In the early rounds of the tournament, we routinely drew larger audiences than television resulting in 11.3 million page views for the duration of the event,” adds Mr. Schmitt. “We are rapidly moving to a day when advertisers will embrace the cross platform delivery of a global audience for major ‘must-see’ events like Wimbledon.”
