2008 Sony Ericsson Open Re-Cap: Prince Dominates Sony Ericsson Open with 7 of 12 Finalist and 5 Champions!
What a weekend it was in Miami! A sign of the continued success of O3 technology, Prince players were firing on all cylinders this weekend at the 2008 Sony Ericsson Open - Everywhere fans looked, they saw players taking to the courts in Prince tour bags, playing Prince O3 racquets, wearing Prince apparel or in Prince O-Series footwear. In fact, of the 12 players competing in the finals this weekend, 7 were playing Prince.
In the end, Prince players captured the men’s singles title, the men’s doubles title and the women’s doubles title with finalist finishes in the women’s singles and doubles as well.
Here is a quick re-cap:
Men’s Singles Champion: Nikolay Davydenko - Ozone Pro Tour and OV1 footwear
Men’s Doubles Champions: Bob and Mike Bryan - O3 Speedport Black
Women’s Singles Finalist: Jelena Jankovic - O3 Speedport Pro White
Women’s Doubles Champions: Ai Sugiyama and Katarina Srebotnik - O3 Speedport Black
Women’s Doubles Finalists: Liezel Huber - Ozone Tour
With his new racquet the talk of the tournament, Davydenko captured the biggest title of his career using the Ozone Pro Tour (with denser string pattern) to take out two top ten players including the the world’s #2. But what about his shoes? Nikolay ran through the men’s draw wearing Prince OV1’ s on his feet - giving fans the first look at the newest “kicks” recently released by Prince.
In doubles, defending champions, the Bryan Bros., captured their first ATP title of the season in just 53 minutes. While Mike stayed with the stealth all-black look of the racquet, brother Bob customized his frame with red and blue color inserts - two of the seven color insert choices now available to players.
On the women’s side, Jelena Jankovic, who picked up the O3 Speedport Pro White prior to the Australian Open, reached her first final of the year and now sits at her highest ranking ever. In addition, three of the four women in the doubles final were playing Prince: Liezel Huber, Ai Sugiyama and Katarina Srebotnik. In the end, it was the duo of Sugiyama and Srebotnik who took home the title. Like Bob Bryan, Sugiyama decided to “trick out” her O3 Speedport Black going with the grey color inserts throughout the tournament.
