Injecting the sport with a dose of mainstream glamour, Sony Ericsson successfully engineered the world’s fist-ever tennis match on water, played yesterday at the rooftop pool of the new Gansevoort South hotel in South Beach, Miami. Balanced on acrylic, invisible platforms that took five days to construct, two of tennis’ most celebrated players, Raphael Nadal and Serena Williams, exchanged serves on a floating court that spanned the entire length of the 110-ft swimming pool. In addition to heralding the upcoming 2008 Sony Ericsson Open (kicking off March 26th), the never-before-seen stunt christened the 22,000sf rooftop of the Gansevoort South hotel, Miami’s newest urban lifestyle resort opening this week.
