USTA Announces 2007 Recreational Coach Workshop Host Site of the Year
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The USTA announced today that the Southeast Michigan Tennis Association has been selected as the 2007 Recreational Coach Workshop Host Site of the Year. This award honors the Recreational Coach Workshop (RCW) host site that went above and beyond to provide an excellent experience for those in attendance. RCWs are interactive, on-court training programs designed for those working with tennis players at the recreational level.
Southeast Michigan Tennis Association, a Community Tennis Association (CTA), hosted two different RCW events in 2007 under the tutelage of their host site director, Katrina Walker. The events catered to 108 participants eager to learn and improve their tennis teaching abilities. The attendees ranged from high school coaches, park & recreation staff, after-school tennis providers and parents.
“Recreational Coach Workshops are a great tool for the on-court training of coaches working with groups of new players, said Kirk Anderson, Director of Recreational Coaches & Programs, USTA. “But nothing happens without a great leader and organizer to make a workshop happen. Katrina Walker has done an outstanding job in selecting sites, recruiting attendees and making sure all the details of the workshop are handled flawlessly so the trainers and participants can have the best experience possible.”
As a result of being selected as the 2007 Recreational Coach Workshop Host Site of the Year, a representative of the Southeast Michigan Tennis Association will receive an all expenses-paid trip to the USTA Tennis Teacher’s Conference in New York City in August 2008, just prior to the US Open.
In 2007, 198 workshops were held nationwide with a total of 6,036 in attendance. Each workshop is six hours in length and conducted by a certified tennis professional specifically trained for the RCW Program. The goal of the program is to help all teachers, coaches, and those interested in learning how to become a recreational coach, with instruction, fresh and innovative ideas and easy-to-follow resources.
