Geoff Norton Named PTR Wheelchair Pro of the Year
Hilton Head Island, SC — Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards this week during the 2008 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 60-plus on court and classroom presentations, a tennis trade show and $25,000 Championships is being held February 16-21, 2008, at Van der Meer Shipyard Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Geoff Norton, of Kansas City, was named PTR Wheelchair Tennis Professional of the Year. Former PTR Director of Development and USTA National Manager Adult/Senior Competition & Technical Programs, Norton is currently Director of Junior High Performance at TCA’s Midtown Tennis Club in Overland Park, Kansas.
Regardless of where he is or in what capacity he is working, Norton has always championed the cause of wheelchair tennis and is a USTA Wheelchair High performance Coach. Norton was instrumental in ensuring that wheelchair tennis was represented in PTR Instructor’s Manual and Preparation for Certification DVD, making PTR the first such organization to include wheelchair tennis in its certification materials. Norton has conducted PTR’s Instructing Wheelchair Tennis workshops in several states, and was the first to introduce the sport in Kenya, Africa. He has conducted wheelchair presentations at PTR Symposia, the Middle States Conference and twice at the national USTA Tennis Teachers Conference.
In addition, Norton coached the 2006 USA Men’s at the World Team Cup Brasilia, Brazil. In 2007, he was the Team Leader for Team USA in Stockholm, Sweden and for the Parapan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Norton is the first able-bodied recipient of this award.
