HEAD Crossbow and Airflow CB racquets

Q: Is there a special way of stringing the new HEAD CrossBow and Airflow CB racquets? I tried to string one and the CrossBow came out when I was tensioning the fifth main.

A: Last month, we published the blanket statement that the crosses on all HEAD racquets had to be strung from the head to the throat. With the HEAD CrossBow and Airflow CB racquets, though, HEAD has updated the stringing instructions based on the type of stringing machine being used. Due to the unique design of these racquets, machines that do not have outside supports for the frame at 4 and 8 o’clock require a special pattern to reduce the stress on the CrossBow itself. This is mainly needed on stringing machines with two-point or four- point mounting systems. If these racquets are strung conventionally on a machine with two-point or four-point mounting, the CrossBow throat piece may actually come out of the throat of the frame. If this happens, the CrossBow can generally be re-installed without any significant damage happening to the frame. However, you should be able to avoid any possibility of this happening by following HEAD’s new updated stringing instructions.

USRSA members will find detailed instructions on the USRSA website. These instructions will also be included in the Fall 2008 version of the Stringer’s Digest.

Note that USRSA members received an e-mail about this issue as soon as we discovered it. If you are a USRSA member, make certain that we have a good e-mail address for you so that you can receive important notifications such as this one.
