Bumperguard restoration

Q: We use alcohol to clean racquets before restringing them. The problem with is that the alcohol dries out the bumperguard, which leaves it looking strangely. What do you recommend to restore the original look?

A: The plastic used in bumperguards is non-porous, so even though it appears to be drying out, this is just a surface condition. You can make the bumperguard shiny again with any number of automotive care products (such as Armor All), or you can simply use a different solvent to begin with, such as Goo Gone or Goof Off, each of which contains petroleum distillates that don’t dull plastic the way that alcohol can.
