Customizing Lighter Racquets

For adding weight inside the handle of lighter racquets, you don’t need lead tape: Scrap string is the thing. And with my method, there is no danger of losing weights inside the handle.

You will need:

  1. fishing weights of various sizes (weights)
  2. a scrap piece of string
  3. cotton balls
  4. masking tape

The fishing weights must have a hole all the way through them. Run a piece of scrap string through the weight(s) and tie a knot. Wrap cotton around the weights so they won’t rattle in the racquet. Then wrap masking tape around the cotton to compress the cotton so it fits into the handle. Distribute the weight between the halves of the handle. The scrap string keeps the weight from migrating into the handle, eliminating the need for filler. Finish by stuffing more cotton in the handle between the weights the butt cap. Replace the butt cap and grip, and you’re done.
