String gauge differences

Q: I am in a debate with the other pro here about the advantages of thinner string. Could you please explain why thinner gauge adds more topspin and power than thicker string?

A: According to Technical Tennis, from Racquet Tech Publishing, “spin is the same off any string, whether it is soft or stiff, sticky or rough, or thick or thin.” You also get about the same spin whether you use high tension or low. Technical Tennis also explains in detail what does create spin off of the strings, and how spin is created.

If pure physics dictated spin, that would be the end of the discussion. However, players subjectively feel that one string/tension combination gives them more spin than other string/tension combinations, which leads to confusion on the issue because what one player achieves with any given set-up is going to be different for another player. Pete Sampras, for example, achieved a lot of spin on his serves using 1.22-gauge string at 75 pounds. However, Sergi Bruguera also achieved tremendous topspin on his groundstrokes using 1.30-gauge string at 51 pounds.

Technical Tennis is available on-line at www.racquettech.com for $12.95 plus shipping and tax (if any).
