Preventing Box Pattern Misweaves

I use a different method to catch misweaves on “box” patterns as discussed in the Tips & Techniques section of the May 2006 issue.

After installing the first cross(es), and then the next outside main, I count the remaining number of grommet holes on that same side. This tells me which way to weave the cross at the other end of the frame.

Using as an example a racquet where the first cross is the bottom cross at the throat, if the number of grommet holes is even, I weave the top cross at the head opposite that of the first cross. If the number of grommet holes is odd, I weave the top cross the same as the first cross. If the first cross is the top cross at the head, the same system allows you to determine the weave of the bottom cross at the throat.

Editor’s note: This works well because it automatically takes into account any uninstalled mains. However, once you have installed one or more crosses at the top and bottom of the pattern, the tip from the May issue allows you to check that your weave is correct, if you have forgotten to use the above method in time.
