Lining up Your Clamps

One key to consistent string jobs is clamping each string so that it is in alignment with the grommet hole. Aside from not forcing the clamp into position regardless of the location of the string, there is another big factor in whether or not the clamp is properly aligned. Most machine clamps have a fixed jaw and a moving jaw. If you put the moving jaw against the string before closing the clamp, clamping the string will deflect the string from where it was before you closed the clamp.

Therefore, always put the fixed jaw of the clamp against the string before clamping. This is easy enough to do when you’re taking your time, but when you are trying to string as fast as you can, don’t forget that you often have to rotate the clamps depending on access to the clamp lever, so pay attention each time you rotate your clamps to ensure that you’re still putting the fixed jaw of the clamp against the string before closing the clamp.
