Tension adjustments

Q: Why are you supposed to adjust tensions when using aramid or polyester strings?

A: Typical aramid and “polyester” strings exhibit much higher dynamic stiffness than typical nylon or natural gut strings. As a result, the stringbed stiffness can be so much higher with aramid or poly than with nylon or gut that the manufacturer recommends reducing the tension on these to enhance the feel and playability of the string. However, with some polys, the tension loss after stringing is so high that the manufacturer recommends stringing at a higher tension to compensate for the inevitable tension loss. Of course, if you like the way a particular aramid or poly string feels and plays without adjusting the tension, then you are certainly free to ignore the manufacturer’s suggestion, as long as you remain within the tension range of the frame.
