Increasing String Life

I string racquets at 60 pounds using 17-gauge string for a high school player who was breaking strings twice each week in a climate that is often times cold and damp. We have been able to more than double string life by adopting a five-minute procedure each day after play. After wiping down the strings, he moves the crosses slightly away from where they intersect the mains, and applies car wax to clean and seal the strings, and reduce friction. Following this regimen, it is not unusual for the crosses to break before the mains. The player says that he does not detect any difference in the playability of the strings.
