Seating Grommet Barrels
Installing bumper guard and grommet strip kits can be daunting or as easy as “falling off a log,” depending on the frame. There appears to be no logic as to which are easy or difficult. Often with difficult frames, the proper and compete seating of the barrel takes an extra effort. Accomplishing seating in conjunction with re-stringing can cause a problem, especially if you are using natural gut or a soft multifilament. Once the barrel is bent or distorted, it will always be a problem. On frames requiring extra effort to seat the barrels, I use a scrap of string through the affected barrels, running through opposing barrels. I tension this to about 40 pounds after making sure the barrels are aligned. This pulls them up snug, thus allowing for good re-stringing.
