Soft String and Blocked Holes

Sometimes with a soft string it is really difficult getting through a blocked hole. Needle nose pliers don’t grab well enough and you “smush” the end of the string. After cutting the end of the string to form a “plastic awl” with my razor knife, I push the string as far through the grommet hole as I can, which usually results in a little tail sticking out on the other side. I then use my Xuron clippers to grab onto the tail and gently pull. Ninety percent of the time, it’s enough to pull the string through.

Editor’s note: The sharp edges of a pair of clippers car help you grab a hold of a thin and short piece of sting better than pliers can. But this does require some finesse in squeezing hard enough to grip the string without applying so much pressure that you accidentally cut it. Don’t try this for the first time if you are almost out of string with which to tie off.
